Drawing a Floor Plan
There are apps like Cohoom that help you create floor plans of your rooms. However, if you don't have access to such an app, you can follow this handy guide to making your own floor plan:
Step 1: Get some white A4 (or larger) paper, a pencil and a measuring tool. It might be a good idea to ask someone to help you if you're using a tape measure!
Step 2: Draw a rough outline of your room on a piece of paper. You can use a ruler to help you here, but freehand is fine too. It doesn't have to be a work of art!
Step 3: Measure each wall, recording the dimensions of the room outline. Usually for interior projects the unit of measurement is cm /cm/, but you can measure in the units you are most comfortable with.
Step 4: Now record the location of all the doors and windows in the room, including the width of each. Please also add a measure on either side of each door or window so it is clear where they are positioned in relation to the wall. If there are additional architectural features in the room such as columns, trellises or niches, mark these in the same way.
Step 5: Add heights. Measure the height from floor to ceiling. Measure the heights of all doors and windows, and be sure to add the sub-window heights as well.

Taking Photos of Your Room
Make sure you have enough light so that the images are clear.
Take pictures of each wall.
Make sure the pictures include the location of the outlets.
If there are items you intend to keep and incorporate into the design, be sure to add them.
Don't forget the ceiling!
